do joystick microswitches wear out over time?

I got my Q*bert up and running about a month ago. We play it a fair
amount and lately there is a lot more play in the joystick. Doesn't
feel as tight. Worse, I find that I have to push harder and more
deliberately in each direction to move Q*. There's a lack of response
to a quick or soft joystick motion. I hear the switches clicking, so I
know contact is being made, do they need to be replaced from time to
time?
I doubt it's that well-known Gottlieb poor soldering on the filter
board, as it was reflowed just last month.
