Because side scrollers are boring after a while. Because vertical games like Galaga would be scrunched and you would lose about 1/3 the image due to wasted edges. Because you can bounce higher on a vertical monitor than a horizontal one. Because in order to get the same amount of height that a rotated 19" monitor has, you have to use a 25" monitor which is much more expensive and heavier. Because there must be a thousand reasons I haven't even begun to think of. --

Yes, you are off base here. The horizontal axis and vertical axis are still the same in the monitor. The orientation of the monitor is what has changed. Your pattern generator will work just fine. If you can't read the signals, turn your head.
