I think what everyone here is missing is that it doesn't matter
whether this seller is shilling or not. Nobody in this group would
pay that kind of money for machines in that condition. Bottom line.
So let 'em do whatever it is they're doing, and don't worry about it,
because none of us would be buying from them anyway. : ) We're not
their target market.
Richard
I agree. Personally, I go to auctions and watch a ton of eBay, and
get pissed that everything usually goes for 50% more than I'm willing
to pay. I think something's worth $40, it goes for $60. I'm willing
to pay $300, it goes for $500. But, I don't go running around crying
"shill" all the time.
Besides... I honestly can't see that these are shilled auctions. I
think these guys know how to list an auction and how to take a damn
good set of pictures. Every auction makes the machines look mint. In
fact, the sellers also pay the big bucks to get their items listed at
the top in the Features Listings of the arcade eBay searches. All 3
of their current auctions are now in the top 25 when you go to
Collectibles> Arcade, Jukeboxes & Pinball> Arcade.
That Tempest had over 7000 views! Do you really think the guys
watching the auctions and paying this much go to auctions or know
about this group or know how to get an account on klov forums and
troubleshoot a dead board or a vector monitor? Do you think they want
to bother tracking down replacement overlays? Getting NOS tempest
spinners? Nope, they think this is the only way to get a game.
These sellers pick proper titles to buy and resell. They aren't
selling obscure games that people don't like. These are very smart
titles to list and resell. Their t-molding is good. There's no
cigarette burns. Their monitors don't look like they have any burn-
in. They seem like original cabinets usually - no crappy conversion
cabs. They have side art. The Tempest seemed like it still had the
reds unfaded.
Both of the won auctions listed above (Ironman and PacMan Plus) both
now have listed the winning bidder on the main page. I'm not sure why
ebay shows them, but they do. Both winners have long ebay histories,
and the one has high prices arcade purchases from around the country.
One was a sweet Mario Bros. that went locally.
If this is shilling, they go to great lengths to do it. I've helped
bust shillers before, and these guys don't look like shills at all.
Just smart eBay sellers.
Jon
Well, I was going to let this thread die, but since I'm sure Jon's
comments will get people who bash his view, I thought I'd chime in one
last time.
I talked to Gary and the Pac-Man Plus was actually an accident. The
winning bidder (very established eBay feedback, you can see for
yourself) accidentally put $8750 as max bid when she meant to put
$875. The runner up of the game (the person who won his MK3 as
well... also quite established eBay feedback) really, really wanted it
and kept bidding until just saying "screw this" as the mistake max bid
was so high.
Gary ended up selling the Pac-Man Plus for $800 to the runner up off
of eBay. Note that is less than many people's max bid on it. He also
called his eBay rep for advice as to your people's opinions and if he
might could put in any auction terms on newbies to make ya'll less
accusatory.
I find it amusing that people point out the low priced games he sold
(lost his ass on the Klax between purchase and paying me to shop the
insides) and still claim shilling. The many bids on those games came
from the fact that a lot of people were trying to get them as cheap as
they could. That's it. As I said before, the games not listed with
free shipping don't go for much.
Jon up there pointed out the Tempest (paid for, folks) and it was
among the nicest ones I've ever seen. QuarterArcade sells restored
Tempests for $2K and there are lots of retailers that sell games for
prices like that. Why so out of the question that someone might go on
eBay, see a featured listing Tempest that's mega-nice and includes
shipping in the bid would go just as high? People wish to believe
anyone getting good money for a game is a shiller... if Gary was
getting $1000 for Buster Bros, ya'd have a case. I recall the Soul
Edge he sold on eBay for $102 a few months ago... FREE SHIPPING. Lost
his ass.
Last I'll say or even read on it... since so many that commented seem
to go to the Dallas auctions, Gary isn't hard to find as I'm usually
nearby (and if ya can't spot me you aren't tryin). Come on up and
introduce yourself and he'll tell you anything you want to know about
his auctions. Nothing for him to hide. Nice, honest guy who lists
smart and just wants to sell eBay items. He sells thousands of items
a month. Come say hello to him.
