Then ship the higher USPS rate. I've shipped 3 or 4 thousand items to
the US and the loss rate is about 3 or 4 out of that. I offered
overnight Fedex, or snailmail and 95% of people chose mail to cheap
out.

- Anyways, with UPS, and Fedex now, they charge the broker fees on
anything over 20$.
- Canada -> US has a 200$ exemption before things have to be cleared
which is why they flow so much smoother that way.
- US -> Canada shipping is half that exemption. Canada wants
everything over 100$ cleared.

Now because of the fact gov't of Canada wants GST on everything over
20$ collected, UPS and FEDEX take this as an opportunity to clear the
item, even though it does not have to be cleared if value is under
100$...and screw you in the process.

They both do this different ways.

UPS - a guy stands on your doorstep with your package in hand saying
you do not get it until you pay the extra money thinking most people
will see their item, and cave in.
Fedex - Gives you your package..so you think you got away with
something using them. But you get the charges in the mail later on and
cannot now refuse the package. They 'could' if they wanted to screw
your credit rating if you do not pay.. I do not know if they will but
do know their 'collections company' they hire is out of the same
building they are in so probably just another part of Fedex with a
different name to scare you. At least with UPS you can tell the driver
to F-off.

How do you get around it?

- Don't use UPS or Fedex... DHL as far as I know does not do this
(yet).

- Ship overnight with UPS or Fedex. If it FLIES over the border you
only pay tax..not the broker fees as it does not get cleared for some
reason... Even when it does have to be cleared the cost is included.
The extra cost to overnight will be about the same as their B.S. fees
so why not have it faster?

- Pay for tracking with USPS. Why US does not have a system like
Expresspost in Canada is beyond me.

- Claim under 20$.

I personally like full value claim as I like insurance... got too many
things broken not to anymore.

Now why Canada allows this is beyond me.. its hidden gouging plain and
simple. Good luck trying to find rates on the Fedex website. You can
find the rates on the UPS website and you will see broker fees are
broken down based on cost ranges of the item coming into Canada..the
more it costs, the more you pay. Since the sender has to declare
value, there IS NO EXCUSE why UPS cannot calculate these fees in
advance as well, so you can see your costs will easily double. And how
a 5,000$ watch costs more in broker fees than a 100$ watch is beyond
me...how do they justify that? Ridiculous.

And Trevor, just keep a list of people who do not ship to Canada. You
would be surprised how many contact you for your stuff the other way.
Tell them sorry.

Your post is just further illustrating my point....to ship to Canada I
now have to consider the shipper (and for me the post office is the
least convenient because UPS and FedEx will pick up packages, but my
rural carrier for USPS won't), how its shipped (land or air), and
explain to the buyer that tracking costs more with USPS. All of this
to avoid CANADA's taxation system. Don't forget, I still have to fill
out a customs form at our friendly post office if I send USPS.

For US shipments, I just package and ship. Which would you prefer to
sell to? And as for the comment about keeping a list and not shipping
the other way, it would be very unlikely that a US collector couldn't
find the same part in the US and likely at a lower price. I've seen
the prices that the Toronto guys ask for games and it is always at a
premium to what I can get right here.

Again, this isn't to pick a fight with any Canadian collector, but to
simply state that the hassle involved with shipping across the border
is enough to discourage many folks to do so.

BTW - to Defender's comment, "I have shipped over 1000 items into and
out-of Canada since 1994. Nothing lost to date and nothing broken."
The last two shipments I have received from Canadian sellers both
arrived damaged. The damage was obviously shipping related. And of the
last three items I have shipped to Canada, one was lost and the other
was damaged. I have NEVER had shipping damage for any domestic
shipments and I am very careful with packing items. BYMMV.
