Are there any good tips on how to get better at it?
I have a dedicated cabinet but I just get overwhelmed & die,die,die!!!

thanks in advance!

The best bet is to play Defender, not Stargate. I've known lots of
people that can whip up on a Defender and get their arse chewed on a
Stargate.

For Stargate-
Pick up lots of humans, especially after you have three. Fly through
the stargate backwards (reverse just before you enter and let off of
thrust) to answer a humanoid call for help while preventing yourself
from warping). Each caught humanoid is worth 2000 pts after the third
one.

Default settings don't allow warping past wave 10. Don't try to
warp on waves 1 and 2. Do it on 3, 6, and 9 to get to wave 12 fast.
You won't even see a Firebomber Showdown until wave 20. You're a fair
player if you can make it to 20.

Any humanoid that hasn't mutated when you warp is worth 2K.
Stargate basically beats the hell out of you pretty fast.

Here are a couple strategies good for both Stargate and Defender.-
Kill all your humans and battle some mutants. You can learn how to
deal with them when that's ALL you have to deal with. You also learn
that it's better not to lose your planet. Your mission is to DEFEND
HUMANS. (It doesn't say that- it's a paraphrase of Missile Command's
directive).

Try adjusting your bonus rate. I think everybody can play
indefinately at 1000 points per bonus ship. At any rate, playing like
this, you'll learn what to expect as things speed up. You'll also
learn that finishing up an attack wave gives you another chance to
play through another one.
Adjust your bonus rate up until you can play for a good while at 10K
per bonus ship. All you have to do to 'beat' the game is to earn
ships as often (on average) as you lose them. Simple strategy.

One thing I like to do (on Defender) is to keep track of how many
ships I have- better yet, I'm just keeping track of how well I'm
doing in general. I count aloud when I lose a man. I restart the
count at every 100,000 mark. If I didn't make it to 10, I'm ahead of
the game for that 100K segment. If I counted to 13 or so, I know I'd
better regain my focus before it's over.

Stand and face the swarmers, taking out as many as you can until you
have to move and weave through them. Turn around quick when they pass
and take them out from behind. They won't turn back on you unless
they reach the edge of the screen.

There's a nice trick I recently picked up off the net for continuing a
game past 1,000,000. You can read about the 990K phenomenon, but the
jist is to earn as close to 100 men between 990K and 1M points
(without going UNDER 100). It involves some counting and
calculating. I must have earned 101 men the last time I tried because
I started earning men again at (1)020,000 points.

This must be how people are able to marathon the machine.

I figure that I take about 8 minutes per 100K, or 80 minutes for a
million. I recently got 2M, and stopped it at 999,975. That's
another little trick/skill to pick up. I'm sure I could have played
for another million, but it took a hunk out of a Saturday already.

I haven't checked them out, but there are replay files at
MARP.retrogames.com that would be worth watching.

Remember- earn 10K average per man and you can play forever.

I've got a Defender control panel for $40
