Jon Sorenson! He got 4 of the top Ten Best Earning Games of 1983
correct... one other person got 4 right just moments after he did, so
Jon got the win by being first.
According to the November 1, 1983 issue of Play Meter Magazine, the
best earning games of 1983 were as follows.
The Top Ten (which is what this contest was guessing at)
1. Pole Position
2. Star Trek
3. Gyruss
4. Time Pilot
5. Popeye
6. Joust
7. Mr. Do!
8 . Super Pac-Man
9. Q*bert
10. Sinistar
and the other half of the top 20, just out of curiousity
11. Front Line
12. Jungle Hunt
13. Xevious
14. Millipede
15. Baby Pac-Man
16. Moon Patrol
17. Donkey Kong Junior
18. Ms. Pac-Man
19. BurgerTime
20. Galaga
I found it interesting to compare collector demand/prices on games
earnings that year. Games like Time Pilot don't exactly make a lot on
the collectors market, yet it was a top earner.
A lot of people were picking games that came out IN 1983, which didn't
work well. For a game to earn well throughout 1983 it would have had
to exist before 1983 or very early in it, therefore hits like Pole
Position II, Dragon's Lair, Track and Field, and Star Wars had no time
to climb the charts for the entire year of 1983.
Some other guessers picked games that were far out of this list by
'83, such as Defender and Asteroids.
I also found it interesting to note some other things. Most people
picked Dig Dug, which wasn't even in the Top 20. Yet Mr. Do!, which
most people think of as a Dig Dug clone, earned better (and sold more
than twice as many units, albeit mostly in kit form)
Nobody picked the number 2, Star Trek.
Congrats to Jon (who wins something from the NOS Artwork stash at
http://www.HyperspaceArcade.com) and let discussion commence. I will
probably do more contests like this in the very near future.
