looks to be a gear attached to a potentiometer of some sort - +5 and
GND in and *two* lines out. Why there are two is puzzling to me. Can
anyone tell me exactly what this encoder is, or maybe tell me where I
can get a replacement?

It's a 360 degree encoder. It was also used in Viper and in Cosmic
Chasm.

If I were to speculate what the two outputs were, I'd guess it would be
something like clock and direction (similar to the outputs of a
trackball encoder).

My Cosmic Chasm was missing this encoder. I remember looking for a
replacement part and I found one online for around $100. So I bought a
Viper on Ebay for $50 and had a fellow collector send me that part, and
I let him keep the rest.

You may be able to use a different device if it is just a CLK and DIR
output (like parts of a trackball controller).
