Tech: Spy hunter takes time to boot

I recently aquired a UR Spy Hunter. When it boots, all I see is a
garbled screen. Then about 5 minutes later, it makes a "Thump, Thump,
Thump" sound about 12 times, then the game finally goes to normal mode
and is functioning. What could be the reason for this? Thanks for any
information.
