Re: Low Tech: cleaning casters

Thanks for the tip!

Was this the white, powdery oxidation or the more
typical red, rust variety? I'm asking since I have
a monitor with the white, powdery stuff and would
like a way to get it clean. Come to think of it, I
have some levelers like that too, but probably a lot
more that are just plain rusty. :(

I am trying to finish up a DK restoration that's destined to become a DDK. The casters have about 20 years worth of crud built up on them plus a lot of oxidation from sitting in someone's damp basement.

Didn't feel like spending any time cleaning them and new replacements are impossible to find. So, I put them in a small bucket with a liberal amount of white vinegar and oxy-clean. Added some hot water to cut down on the volcanic eruption effect taking place. Not sure why I chose this concoction, but it worked like a charm. Few hours later and the gunk was dissolved and a quick scrub revealed clean wheels and shiny chrome plate. They spin smooth as silk now as well. Goofy fix I realize, but what the heck.
