Off the top of my head, haven't given it much thought myself yet, how
about:
"you can mix any two groups, but the numbers of those groups would
have to be 1 even and 1 odd number." (e.g. 1 and 4, or 2 and 5, but
not 2 and 4)
You wouldn't be beefing up clans by allowing both 'editions' of their
ranks to be combined, and I think the weenie problem would be limited
too. But we'd be opening up lots of new opportunities, and also
enabling people who don't buy that many boosters per set to combine
their cards better*.
Plus, it would make it possible to make new cards for older groups (as
I mentioned earlier, as a fix to 'holes' in past groups).
Possible problems?
Again, G2 indies are populated with about 25 vamps for each of the Fos,
Gio, Assam, and Ravnos. Instead of just having a weak G3/4 pairing, your
new rule would make every pairing which uses G2 more diverse than any other
even Group choice. This doesn't jive with the policy of using groups to
offer people with only access to newer groups a "fair shake" at the game...
*A friend of mine started playing with the !Ven from SW, and was very
sad he couldn't use his group 5 Elimelech from the SoC booster he
recently bought. I didn't see much trouble in doing this, if it were
allowed though, as opposed to allowing him to use any !Ven from SW or
3rd.
New groups always pose a big problem when they are initially released,
particularly when they're under-populated. I'd suggest the way to fix this
is to try to make sure that, when WW _does_ launch a new group, they do so
with some minimum number of vampires in it (say, 5 to 8, or some such).
Having a group 4 with only a couple of vamps in it usually just menas you
end up holding on to those vamps, waiting for the rest of his playmates to
come along. Thats a waste of card space in the mean time (barring "star"
vampires, around which a whole deck concept can be built).
