Tournament Report
Lunatic Eruption: Northampton
June 17th, 2006
Two 2 ½ rounds plus final
On a rainy weekend day in June, 12 Methuselahs heard the call and
descended upon the pioneer valley from such far flung locations as
Boston and Ithaca, NY. Together they schemed to inflict mass insanity
upon the poor denizens of the region-by which I mean they were going
to play some VTES, of course. The tournament got off to a late start,
as seems to happen a lot, because a car full of three players from the
Boston area was a bit behind schedule. Not knowing how long they'd
be, I sent one player home to Northampton to grab the deck he'd
forgotten. By the time Henri got back, the other 3 had arrived and we
were all itching to start. Luckily, we had planned for a fairly short
tournament, so the delay didn't end up costing us the whole evening.
Highlights of the day included:
Dave Clooney showing up an hour early with a fifth of Knob Creek
bourbon as additional surprise support, and then cleaning the store's
bathroom to accommodate the out of town guests.
Break the Code hitting the table at least 3 times, despite the absence
of even one single Imbued in any player's crypt.
Peter Bakija plowing through a third of his deck to torporize one
freakin' minion.
Me screwing up the second round seating somehow, resulting in several
minutes of chaos and confusion while the players sorted it out without
my help.
Never needing the extra half hour we added to the time limit.
Before going into the final round, the standings were:
(* = this player had never previously played in a standard constructed
tournament)
Scott Gomes 2 GW, 7 VP Undue Influence Setite stealth bleed
Ben Peal 1 GW, 4 VP Torrance Circle power bleed
George Herman 1 GW, 3 VP, 90 TP Group 1-2 Toreador fatties
*Amber Kanner 1 GW, 3 VP, 78 TP Omaya + friends intercept combat
*Marc Libertore 1 GW, 3 VP, 78 TP Eurobrujah
Peter Bakija 0 GW, 2 VP Weenie potence flung junk
Matt Hirsch 0 GW, 1 VP, 66 TP Chicago Circle with some guns
Dave Clooney 0 GW, 1 VP, 66 TP Al-Muntaquim combat toolbox
Jason Schneiderman 0 GW, 0 VP, 48 TP Aus, Pre, Vic stuff
Jesse C-N 0 GW, 0 VP, 48 TP !Tremere and Gargoyles
*Henri Folse 0 GW, 0 VP, 36 TP Hartmut Stover vote
*Ashley Flagg 0 GW, 0 VP, 36 TP Lasombra with protean
Unfortunately, Marc was called to an emergency before the final round,
so Peter Bakija got to play in the finals with his whopping score of 0
GW, 2 VP. The final round seating ended up being:
Scott-->George-->Ben-->Amber-->Peter
Amber went first, starting to influence out Omaya, Ghivran, and
Bothwell. Scott started bringing out his minions, took a little while
to go anarch and then commenced bleeding into George. George got to a
late start influencing up Anneke, Isabel De Leon, and Masika, allowing
Peter room to start hammering on Ben with his weenie rushers. Peter
had put down an Anarch Revolt, and then dropped Haven Uncovered on
Truman, who had gone anarch. In a demented flurry of card cycling,
Peter's weenies repeatedly rushed the Brother, chucking every object
in the valley at him while he repeatedly prevented the damage with
fortitude. Truman did finally go down, but got rescued. This happened
more than once.
Peter was getting really close to ousting Ben when George called a
Parity Shift from Peter's pool. Scott threatened to Delay unless at
least 4 pool was given to Ben, and George acquiesced. Peter tried like
hell to score his 1 vp, drawing into Fame in the process (d'oh!) but
ultimately failed and was bled out by the Toreador on their next turn.
During this time, the Amblor had a healthy amount of room to move,
since her predator was getting wrecked. However, she just wasn't
able to produce enough forward pressure to bother Scott much, since he
wasn't taking many undirected actions and he could afford to let
bleeds for 1 through when he didn't have Majesty in hand. In a turn
that seemed to surprise/impress everyone, Scott ripped off Masika from
George with Form of Corruption and then tapped out bleeding for a total
of 10, ousting George the turn after he'd ousted Peter. Ben was not
far behind when the Anarchs started bleeding him, and Amber only lasted
a few turns due to Scott's obscene minion advantage garnered from a
combination of weenitude and Undue Influence.
