Hm. Don't want to further the subject away even more, but I couldn't
resist.
I really, really understand that you guys want websites that are as
fast to load as possible - specially when the website in question is
used as a reference point, a collection of big chunks of information
(decks, rulings, cardtext etc.) where you'll usually search for a
specific little piece when you need it (say, a clarification or how
many starter only vampires have been released and so on).
But you do realize that fast download has a lot more to do with other
factors besides graphical excellence, don't you? From the software used
to convert the original layouts to image formats suitable for the
internet (some produce smaller files than others) to server speed to
skill on the part of the designer to follow KISS - Keep It Simple,
Stupid - when coding the pages (basically using server-side run script
languages like PERL, ASP and PHP can cause websites to run slower due
to server issues or non-proper installation of some scripts on the
viewer's browser) and so on. Not to mention Flash - which I
particularly don't like because it is still slow and requires
client-side software to be installed, which is bad (and prompts people
to spend time and effort to do the animations you Charles complain
about. I don't like them either, for the most part).
That diatribe was just to say that The Path of Blood and Anarch seem to
be pretty quick on the speed of download part, considering how
beautiful the sites are (The Path of Blood specially). They'll never be
as fast as The Lasombra's because the latter has almost no image
around, and it need not to have. The WW website occasional slow page
download rate strikes me as an effect of the PHP database interface,
which is interesting if you want to maintain a professional website
with an online store and integration of the regular content with it, so
I wouldn't say that can really be avoided.
And I must say that the sheer amount of information collected by the
Lasombra after all these years makes almost any comparation between
every other VTES website with it an unfair one, even when we're talking
about graphics only - it's easy to overlook aesthetics when you have a
website that contains virtually everything possible to know about the
game. I'd say TheLasombra's website is hours concours, and the other
ones are welcome additions since a little aesthetic pleasure on the
part of the others (or the good show of interactivity The Path of Blood
offers) only contributes to it. Think of it as how good it is to have
good art on the cards themselves: we don't really need the art to play
the game; it adds up on the price of the final result; but when the
cards have good art, we're pleased anyway because it just adds value to
our collection...
