On Windows it is better to run the native Windows version instead of

Hows That? a version with a gui compiled into it is supposed to be more
efficient than a plain ascii one? Sorry, I don't agree.

If your PC has no problems running Win9x or NT4 or later, you won't
ever see timing issues because of the GUI routines of Nethack. What
you /may/ see with the DOS port running in a Virtual DOS machine in
Windows, though, are negotiation conflicts or timing issues for the
necessary access to hardware resources, software interrupts, and the
like.

Well it *wasn't* ascii/ansii anyways. It was a GUI with the pictures
replaced by bitmaps of letters and other characters. I can't see that
being more efficient no matter *how* it's done. Why this difference
couldn't be explained is my only question.

I'll stick to *real* ascii, thanks. The MS port still sucks though. The
running through hallways isn't done *nearly* as well as the *nix port. Try
going down a diagonal hallway sometime: the MS version stops at every bend
and the *nix version just shoots down. Why this is should be so is another
question for bored people I guess.
