I remember that netscape and emacs once required 8 MB *each*
(and they core dumped when the executable got stripped; that
was on AIX and HP-UX, AFAIR); has this situation changed?

Probably for the worse, but it was certainly doable in days past and
as I said I have several machines in the 128 MB range. That's all you
need for light work (which X+nethack with tiles comfortably qualifies
as)
.
