Tuesday I built up my usual planes kit and ascended to DLVL 1 with the
amulet, dropped the amulet to cast some more haste self and identify
for the final run before charging wands, and then stepped up the
stairs with the amulet there on the floor.
I was on turn 7500.
So I was about to give up the idea of competing for the speed
ascension title this year. But I decided to play a few more hours
just to see. I'd tried a few techniques for getting through the early
game with things I needed and I still have to perfect those. I also
didn't need to get up in 7500 turns. Steveyo's leading score to beat
was 9231 turns, mostly because he doddered around on the ascension
run, and that's not an out of reach target, though it was the third
fastest legitimate ascension I know of and the fastest ever on
devnull.
I usually play Wiz Elf Fem Cha when I'm playing speed. I startscum
enough to have a magic marker and an instrument that will open the
castle gate.
Just playing for sport after giving up the fast title I descended as
usual to DLVL 2 and searched for the stairs to the mines. Dungeon
noises indicated a shop and I found it first. The shop had a BoH and
a 888 zorkmid wand. I lined up the shopkeeper, killed off a few sewer
rats he'd allowed to wander in, and lined him up again, which was
surprisingly hard. It's important to do that in case the wand is /
oDeath.
It was wishing (0:1). First wish was two blessed scrolls of
charging. Then a /oDeath to get it out of the shop. Next was
Magicbane and the Master Key of Thievery.
I descended to minetown and it was Bazaar town, my least favorite of
all possible minetowns. I /oDeath'd the priest and converted the
altar. Gained some levels and wished for three cursed scrolls of
genocide. Eventually used them to get silver dragon scales and raise
my level to 16 with wraith corpses. Found a sink and farmed up six or
seven black puddings to get poison, fire, and shock resistance on
about DLVL 20. Wrote up my favorite spellbooks and jumped through the
castle past the soldiers after playing drawbridge boogie. Then wrote
up some cursed scrolls of teleport and returned to the quest, dug
straight down to the goal level, took the Eye, branchported to the
luckstone, and casually dug down through Gehennom.
It was all done on a lazy, nonserious pace. If I ever do another 7k
turn ascension (or yet-another-stupid-survived) I want it to be done
without early wishes and the like, the clean way my 7.5k blunder
went. But I saw that it was possible to get down to about 9k turns
when I did the invocation ritual at turn 8457.
I spent my last wishes (except the wrest wish, which I kept for
astral) on c!oGainLevel and skipped Asmo, Baal, Orcus, the Valley, the
Castle, and Medusa on the way up. Still got hit with a fair number of
mysterious forces, mostly on no-teleport wiz tower levels which left
me thinking there was no way I was going up in less than 9231 turns.
But things went well in the Dungeons and I was at the upstair on DLVL
1 at T:8916. The portal on Earth was far away, I didn't have a means
of being invisible on air, and I didn't have enough charges in my /
oTele for Astral.
I was in trouble on astral which a !oFullHealing and Vlad's
"oLifeSaving fixed. I had /oDeath charges, but not enough /oTele
charges. I usually jump away from my pet before I put on conflict and
that took longer than usual so there were more monsters surrounding me
than I like. So I deathed the things in my way, which allowed Angels
to surround me. That meant I had to kill them all with +2 Magicbane.
Not a nice, time-efficient thing. I knew if the first altar was wrong
I still had time to get back to another and a couple more !oFH to make
it work, but it would be dangerous. If that first altar had been
lawful, I'd have wrested my last wish and used it for a HOOA and if it
had been neutral I'd have wrested for a rubber chicken or a /oTele.
That should have made things all right.
An odd note is that I played this game hatless. I never, so far as I
recall, wore a helmet, cap, pot, helm, or hat of any kind. Never had
cold resistance or intrinsic telepathy, either. Just didn't have time
to chase things like that.
