If it's running Linux doesn't that make it a general
purpose computer, at least while it's running Linux?

Can you change the video card? no. Can you change the memory in it?
no. Can you add an internal hard drive? no. Can you add *any* PCI
cards to it? no. That makes it a closed box game system that by
necessity has a microprocessor, but is hardly a home computer for the
above reasons.

So my old C64 (and most early home machines, in fact) wasn't a home
computer? Fascinating. Do go on.

In comparison to an IBM PC clone or a modern day MAC or a (non-terminal)
sun system yes. Back then there was different differences between home
computers and game consoles: no ram to speak of, only TV output, 16
colours only for graphics. As modern computers became expandable game
consoles were (and always will be due to price) less so. You can't
compare a atari game machine from the 80's to a MARK I either, the
comparison is meaningless. I had a C64 back then and there were
*significant* limitations to the extent that I would be tempted to call
it just a game machine now: No real disk operating system (you "talked"
directly to the drive), only Basic/ML. Cartidge games - which you
haven't seen since the ADAM in computers.
