the first place, despite how easy it is?"
This can be changed by using the dungeon depth to influence
the value of the items in the shop. If a shop near Medusa
probably has a couple of artifacts and some +7 armor items, it
might start being worth it again.
Of course, it's the player character's equipment getting better and
better as the game progresses that makes the deeper levels
gradually easier to survive. Supply the user with meaner
equipment to keep shops interesting and that effect gets worse.
