Breaking your own eggs and luck.

Is there any sneaky way to avoid the luck penalty for breaking your
own eggs?

I remember reading once somewhere that if you laid a bunch of eggs,
stuffed them into a container and waited untill they're dead, when you
pull them out they would be one stack, and you wouldn't suffer a luck
penalty for breaking them.

I tried that on my last Wizard game, laid 7 cockatrice eggs and took
them out later, they stacked just as it was said they would. I run
across Asmodeus, and not wanting to play hide and seek with him, I
decided to use an egg on him. I considered that if I threw one, it may
miss and be wasteful, so instead I decided to wield one and smack him
over the head.

Turns out when you do that, you wield *all* the eggs at once and smash
*all* of them. How the hell do you wield 7 eggs at once anyway?

A potion of enlightenment I poly'd up later on told me I had lost a
significant amount of luck, down to only 'very lucky' instead of
'extremely' lucky.

So that brings me to my question, is there any way to avoid the luck
penalty? Also, the Gems and Luck spoiler states that you lose n luck
for 'Breaking n eggs laid by you (at worst -5).' What does it mean by
at worst -5? Does it mean that you can only lose 5 in total, and that
any eggs after that are unaffected, or does it mean in a situation
like mind where I smashed 7 at once, I would only receive the penalty
for smashing 5?
