That's exactly my point - wishing is overpowered and spoils games.
Unfortunately, Nethack's special attack effects model, where there are
attacks you cannot afford to be affected by even once, accompanied by
perfect Boolean defences against them, means that the wishing system
more or less as it now stands is compulsory, because without it nobody
except Marvin, Rast, pudding farmers, and fanatical polypilers can
ascend.
Your proposed transition from "wishing" to "categorised Acquirement" is
tinkering around the edges while totally ignoring the incontinent
elephant in the middle of the room.
