Have you ever played nethack before? Both Magicbane and your own
quest artifact are easily stealable, and wizards are excellent
casters--I could see preferring an elven cloak, protection, or oilskin
over MR, though I personally wouldn't. But a robe?
At the risk of legitimizing Mr. Cobb's bogus analysis, I do it all
the time; saves having to burn skill slots to cast high-level spells,
especially if I'm playing fast enough to not bother with XL30. (...which,
while it has a number of advantages, is boring to get.)
Either you play moderately fast and loose--in which case the Eye and
magicbane suffice--or you are paranoid and wear the CoMR or GDSM
(unless you find another quest artifact). But even if you're fast
and loose, there's practically never a reason to wear a robe as a
standard item (rather than a once-in-a-while thing) for wizards.
Extra point of AC! :)
That leaves two reasons to wield MB, to carry it around for curse
protection against wandering monsters and to inflict afflictions instead
of silver or other damage bonuses.
No. Curse resistance is really the only reason to wield it. Backuup
MR is nice but hardly necessary--it's more important for that early
on for rogues et al who wish it up and can wield it to safely avoid
polytraps, dive for the castle w/o worrying as much about death rays,
etc. Really, 1-turn E is the biggest effect early on, but that
doesn't require wielding it. Later on, curse resistance is huge.
Magicbane and the Eye together are comfortable MR for me; the Eye alone
isn't, and if I'm not still wearing the starting cloak, I want to wield
Magicbane. (Yes, I know someone has a story about getting Magicbane
bullwhipped and the Eye stolen on the same turn and then getting touch
of deathed. That is what my amulet of lifesaving is for. Thanks, Vlad!)
