IMO the main reason for preferring an MC=3 cloak in the early

No. Poison attacks are actually what MC3 helps most against, IMO. Level
drain is irrelevant, since you can easily regain those few levels drained

How? Burning up a limited supply of !full healing?

Killing something.

That only regains one level, not a few levels drained.

So you're assuming that there are consecutive successfull drain attacks
before the player gets a chance to kill something? I think at that point
the chances are so low that it's not worth considering.

None of those are nearly as important as the early PR/lycanthropy and
later level drain protection, but they add up IMO.

I did always accept protection against poison as a very valid reason to wear
MC3 before PR is available. Lycantrophy doesn't ever happen to me anymore
since I play marginally carefully. You are warned early against
lycantropes, you can fight at a distance, they respect Elbereth.

I tried displacement again after the
last time this topic came up here, and it just seemed extraordinarily
painful to me.

I happen to like it. The displacing effect is wonderful, and I don't even
notice any level loss after blindly mowing through the valley, for example.
But to each his own.

I think I also don't find the displacing effect all that wonderful,
which means I don't need MC3 to be incredibly wonderful to find it
preferrable.

Of course, displacement is the only reason not to have that little extra
protection. Once I got used to its effects, I loved it. Especially in
places like the valley, most of the hits you take are "accidental", and
with all the monsters hitting each other it almost feels like conflict.
