Hi,
I'm trying to play nethack in a console window in KDE, but I'm
getting a strange graphical problem with both Konsole and xterm.

What happens is sometimes symbols doesn't get un-drawn when I move,
so I am left with a number of @s left around the level from where I
have been. This especially seems to happen more when I quick move
with 5 on the num pad.

For example, this is what happened after I went right till I got to
the door, and them came back to the middle room. One @ is me, and
one d is my dog, the rest are graphical glitches:

â??â??â??â??â??â??â??â??â??â??â??â??â??
#+
â??â??â??â??â??â?? â??···········â??
### â??·····#######â??·········d·â?? #
â??·<··â?? #··········@·â?? ###
â??`···â?? ##â??··········dâ?? #
â??â??+â??â??â?? â??············#d#ddddd#d@#
â??â??â??â??â??â??â??â??â??â??â??â??â??

There seems to be no clear pattern to this problem, if I went back
up and down that corridor the problem might happen again, and it
might not.

Another problem is that occasionally the highlighted space goes
beyond a step beyond where I go. So sometimes I step left, leave an
@ to my right, and I am not highlighted but the space to my left is!

It works fine when I run in a proper console, but not in console
window in KDE. (And I don't want to run in a console because amarok
no longer wants to goto the

Rest of the sentence please?

Sorry, meant to say that when I run in a proper console amarok won't
start playing the next song until I go to KDE by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F7.
This may be a compiz related problem, I'm not sure.

Try workbone - if it's cd's you're playing. Sounds to me like a pretty
scuzzy app if you have to do that - sounds like it was designed for
windoze.

This seems really crazy, any ideas what is going wrong?

You haven't set up xterm properly (or the menu item) to emulate the
pc character set - it's probably doing vt220. If you right click on
the screen or the menubar, the configuration should come up and you
can use man xterm to set it up in your menu in ~/.kde for nethack.

Sorry, can't work out how to do that. There seems to be no right click
configuration with Xterm, and I tried changing some stuff in konsole
like encoding and keyboard, but that didn't help. Also I looked in man
xterm for vt220 stuff and it all seemed to be to do with keyboard
input, and googling didn't help.

Never mind - you don't know enough unix apparently. You have to set your
terminal attributes. The other replier stated what I couldn't recall.
That's what I meant by maintenance - shell scripts, modifying
/etc/profile and such.

Anyway, I fixed the problem, adept didn't seem to think that nethack
was installed, so I renamed the directory in /usr/games/lib and the
link in /usr/games and then installed nethack-console, and it works
now! Not sure how I installed it last time, maybe with the tar.gz. But
the ubuntu package works fine.

Check if you can save games properly and new bones file are being made -
changing directory names under /usr *anywhere* is not a good idea at
*all*.

Thanks for the help anyway
