Throwing salt water on puddings, slimes, and gelatinous cubes

type, to me. What else could salt water do?

Salt water could be used to preserve meat. In gameplay terms, corpses
dipped in salt water would rot slower than normal.

Why not just add a new food item (or tool) to the game: a lump of salt?

- As suggested, you could (a)pply it to corpses to preserve them
indefinitely.
- Throwing it at zombies (and scoring a successful hit) would make them
instantly disintegrate.
- Eating it would produce an appropriate message, like, "Blah! You
cough and spit."
- Levitating and dropping it on the floor (or dropping it down stairs,
a hole, etc.) would use up the salt and be -1 to luck ("You spill the
salt all over the floor! You feel unlucky.")
- Dropping it on an ice square would dissolve the ice.
- Salt would be worth a great deal in shops, since in medieval times it
was a highly valued substance.
- It would have a much greater chance of being found in the Mines. As
well, there could be an special, rarely-occurring room (like a treasure
zoo) containing big lumps of salt hanging from the ceiling: "You enter
a salt cave!" Of course, among the salt would be various glass
piercers, disguised as stalactites, waiting to drop on your
unsuspecting head.
- Throwing it at any vegetative or slimy creature (worms, molds, fungi,
puddings, and so forth) would inflict massive damage, and cause them to
"shriek in pain."
- Applying it to a potion of water would turn it into salt water -
though I'm not sure what further effect this would have.
- Finally, dogs, cats, horses, and any other salt-loving pet would
consider it a treat (like tripe rations or meatballs).
