Re: What am I doing wrong?

After two ascension, with a valk and a samurai, I've decided next try a
non-melee character. I chose elven wizard. After 78 tries and early
YASD's I'm getting desparate. The deepest I've gotten was Dlvl 11,
however 48 times I've gotten killed on Dlvl 3 or earlier. The most
common causes of death are:

7 times by a small mimic (+1 giant mimic)
7 times by a dwarf (+1 dwarf lord)
4 times by a sewer rat
3 times by a gnome lord

So you didn't use attack spells but have let the monsters come close
to melee range? Don't let them come close; remember, you are a wizard!

... (+many obscure deaths, like killed by kickin a rock and killed by
sipping boiling water)

If it hurts don't do that!

This is how I've done it so far:
<snip>

Maybe 3/4 times I go first to mines, and most of those times I'll try
to reach to the mines while Exl lvl 1-3 (protection run). Most of the
very early deaths are a result of such attempt -- I find it very
difficult to stay alive at Exp: 1 in mines.

Again; don't do that.

I know that chaotic Elven
is difficult in the mines, but who wants to be a gnome, really? And
human is out of the question too, without infravision I'll die in dark
mines even sooner.

The mines is difficult territory. Only enter them if you are sufficiently
high level, have enough HP's, and a source of light - alternatively a
digging tool to dig holes until you reach mine town and buy some light
source.

I also know that praying when your HP is below 5 might result God
raising your HP by few points, but that doesn't seem to be enough.

No. If you're god restores your HP's you are restored to your maximum.
But any adjacent creature(s) will immediately hit you when your prayer
is done, so you'll again lose some points.

YAAD: Last night I got to mine town at Exp. lvl 2 and had earlier found
a tiny 2x2 general store which was easy to clean up by credit cloning.

Don't do the protection racket if you suffer from many deaths.

I got 3 points of protection in AC, but when I went to a different
store to get more money I noticed there was a grave Inside a store. It
read: "xxxx, killed by holy water". I wandered how on earth can you get
killed by holy water? Then I started s)earching for mimics as I always
do in store, and yes, next to me was a giant mimic (so that's what the
holy water was...). Giant mimic hits. All my 23 HP's were gone in one
turn. DYWYPI?

It has nothing to do with mimiks; drinking holy water is not healthy
for some characters.

Mimics are a real problem when I'll try not to level up, but I still
need to go to stores to get money for protection.

Again, don't do the protection racket, don't go into the mines if low
at HP's

If I know sleeping spell or have tooled horn to scare monster away,
things are little easier.

That's the way Nethack works; try to use _any_ object to your advance,
don't restrict yourself. Continue using what you experienced to be of
help. But don't slavishly rely on any specific item being available,
accept and work with what you have got.

Sometimes I forget about protection run and let myself level up. I
throw daggers and #enhance that skill. I've gotten better results that
way,

So continue doing that, it's a good strategy.

but inferior AC and opponents that get quickly very hard will make
things difficult very soon.

Once you've levelled up you may cautiously enter the first mine level;
occasionally gnomes, orcs, and dwarfs will come to the stairs where you
can kill them to get their armour. If you get hit too much, go upstairs
to heal. Rinse and repeat.

After Sokoban Mine End was way too much.

No surprise; mine end is no piece of cake. Be careful there! Or enter
only if you are really buff.

I
usually only wear leather armor if I find that, and only minimal armor
to keep my force bolt failing rate below 10%. I am thinking I probably
should rely on daggers more and use whatever armor is available, even
if that means I can't use spells, until I'll get hold of DSM (which I
haven't gotten yet, not once.

Hmm, that's a more difficult question to answer...
Use daggers - yes.
Use spells (as a wizard) - yes.
Use armor that prevents spellcasting - hmm.. - usually no (for a wizard).
The problem is to stay alive before you get to see a dragon.

Only one time I have found blessed magic
lamp, and that time djinni was out of wishes... other times when I've
found two kinds of lamps, I was unable to bless them).

I wouldn't rely on wishing; the odds are mostly against you. And in case
of your magic lamp, it's best used to reduce the problems of unlit mines
or other levels. See, not only as a wizard you want to be prepared and
warned about any monster that might hurt you. An infinite light sourse
will help you a lot to target ranged attacks (spells and daggers) and to
flee in time if necessary!

I've tried writing E-word into dust, but many times monsters seem to
ignore it.

Yes, all humans and elfs, etc. ignore them, and minotauri for example.

One hit is often too much when your HP is 15 and AC 7...
Engraving E-word takes too long, and I don't always have hard ring or
gem to write with. Anyways I would prefer not to use Elbereth too much.

There *is* a trade-off using Elbereth, as you noticed. No special hint
here. Try to not let the monsters come close, use ranged attacks, and
retreat if necessary.

Any suggestions/ideas?

Hope you found some of value.
