Hi everybody,
I'm still a newbie on the game (I have yet to go beyond level 7).
I tried to avoid any spoilers, and read only the official guide and the
Absolute Beginner's Guide (ABG) - so possibly I missed the answer to my
basic question, which is: HOW TO AVOID ALWAYS DYING OF STARVATION IN
THIS GAME?
Learn which corpses are safe to eat, and eat them. Acquiring
poison resistance (or starting with it, as an orc, barbarian, or
healer... monks get it early, too) will expand the "safe" category.
Don't waste time before you've secured a sufficient food supply.
Sacfesting (especially! It burns food you could be eating) can wait,
swindling every zorkmid out of the shopkeepers can wait, digging tunnels
to the MMVs can wait, loitering around waiting to level up can wait.
Finding secret doors can't always wait, but, with experience, you'll
learn to recognize where they're likely to be, which will drastically
reduce the time spent searching.
Avoid going around Burdened, and *don't* go around Stressed (or,
gods forbid, worse). These not only increase your food consumption, they
reduce your effectiveness, and will get you killed the ordinary way if
they don't starve you first.
Rings and amulets burn nutrition. Don't wear them unless they're
really useful ones. A couple of the really useful ones burn nutrition
*very* quickly... don't wear them except when you *really* need them.
Avoid casting spells unless you're an Intelligent-enough Wizard
(though there is one spell that can feed you... and it isn't detect
food).
And this applies to many, many things: Stay in your god's good
graces, and #pray when you're in trouble (but not too often).
By the midgame, you'll have food coming out your ears, and most
of these restrictions will vanish. But going around Burdened or Stressed
is always a bad idea.
