Traps, pits, and the DIY fortress

A short while ago, I stumbled upon the bones level of a character in
Minetown on a public server. This enterprising individual had opened
several exits to the altar room, and at each one, dug a pit to trap
anything coming in. Obviously, this didn't do him much good, but I
tried this in later games, digging out loads of pits around each
entrance to a "safe room", or even carving out a square and surrounding
a smaller square inside with pits.
This strategy indeed managed to stop many of the creatures coming in
to attack me, but as soon as I attempted to leave the safety of the
little fortress, I immediately got stuck in my own pits, and after a
few attempts of going in and out to collect my daggers or whatnot got
me stuck in a pit with monsters attacking me from above. Needless to
say, the DYWYPI happened soon afterwards.
Despite its many failings, I still find this pit-digging strategy
worthy of some interest. What I want to try to create is a line of
pits, with all but one on each side filled with some possible trap, so
that a monster that is ruthless enough to dare the pits will not
discriminated between the ones with traps on the bottom or the "safer"
pit that I've left for my own purposes, thus giving myself an advantage
even going outside of the defenses.
However, I don't know of a way to effectively trap my pits besides
perhaps applying beartraps in them, but that is of course extremely
unfeasable. Is there perhaps a better way of making pits and such?

Oh, and by the way, I believe I might have found a bug in the game.
While stepping on a square with a pit, you are either inside of it, or
on the edge, and if you arrive on the edge ("You escape your pit!"),
you are not allowed to reach for the items at the bottom. ("You cannot
reach the bottom of the pit!") However, I've noticed that after getting
out of the pit ("You crawl to the edge of the pit."), you can still eat
corpses at the bottom. (Perhaps this is limited to half-eaten corpses,
but in that case I supposed you'll have dragged them upwards, making it
logical.) I've also found that if you #sit on a pit while you're on the
edge, and there's sharp objects at the bottom, it'll still give you the
message "You sit very comfortably on top of the daggers." or something
like that, despite the fact that you cannot even reach the stuff at the
bottom?

Can someone confirm?
