This ought to be quite rare, the odds should be similar to a pet
getting stuck in a pit that it has already identified. Obviosuly,
leashed cats would be immune to tree-trapping. A cat in a tree has a
chance of shaking the odd bit of fruit loose.
Large cats might not be able to fit up there.
4) If you happen to be levitating/ flying, you can simply (u)ntrap the
cat.
5) Also, if you are polymorphed into a suitably tall creature (eg
giant, mumak) you can use (u)ntrap.
I think untrap should work to climb the tree to retrieve the cat, even
if you're not large or flying, but have about the same success as
removing the cat from a pit trap. (With a small chance of damage if
you fall out of the tree.)
How would you handle leashes?
Of course this differentiates cats and dogs a little, so for balance...
Trees are so rare in the game that actual balance issues here are
negligable. The animals need more differentiation between them,
though.
There are so many good patch ideas now (and even actual patches) that
hopefully the next version of Nethack will be special indeed. If they
ever release one....
