I've recently gotten myself addicted to nethack. I've tried to stay
away from spoilers, so I was pretty excited with the current game,
which was a human monk.
Leprechaun Hall on DL 9, Treasure Zoo on DL 10, and Vault on DL 11
meant I could affod protection twice. There was also a coaligned altar
on DL 10, so by saccing all of the zoo occupants I got sunsword as an
artifact. It remained my light source throughout the game. Protection
pushed my AC down to -2, which I think is pretty good for mid-game.
I dealt with most monsters by casting sleep on them, pummeling them
until they woke up, casting sleep again, etc. It proved remakably
effective, and saved my life more than once. A ring of teleport control
+ several ways of teleport also proved to be useful, since I could
freely jump around the map.
DL 13 was quest level. There also happened to be a treasure zoo on that
level, which I unwisely tried to fight. I brought most creatures to a
corridor, but one of the first creatures I hit was a floating eye. I
ended up paralyzed between two weak creatures, but a quantum mechanic
hit me and teleported me next to a yeti. Goodbye Dakar the Monk.
Monks are definitely fun. The starting healing and sleep books are very
helpful, and the loads of food are useful. I should try more of them;
this was the first time I brought a character into the midgame.
Is there any general advice anybody has about the midgame? Nethack has
sucked up a huge portion of my time, so I'd like to get better at it.
;)
