Definitely. But there are a *lot* of tricks. And not all
tricks will be needed in any one game. Maybe not even most
tricks.

You said hints so that's what I'm trying for. Be aware that
what seems like a complete, accurate and precise answer to you
can still just be a vague indication at everything involved in
the answer.

Yes, Nethack is that complicated. "A mile wide and a foot
deep" is how I've described it before.

And depending on how you've phrased the question and how well
it maps onto how Nethack does things the answer can easily be:
"Technically less but practically no."

All scrolls act differently when read while confused. They
also tend to have different effects depending on their blessed/
uncursed/cursed status. Confused reading can interact with the
b/u/c status.

The confused effect can be more or less useful than the
unconfused effect. Or it can be just as useful, but in a
different situation than normal.

For the whole story in all its 700+ lines of spoilerific glory
see:

<http://www.spod-central.org/~psmith/nh/scrl-343.txt>

NB: Spoilers are not walkthroughs, they're not even guides.
They are (barely) human readable dumps of what the Nethack code
does. (The scroll spoiler is one of the more readable ones,
imho.)

(I've posted before that a single Nethack spoiler probably has
more data than most commercial game walkthroughs, but in one
indigestible lump.)

Deducing the best way to play the game from reading spoilers
is difficult. Your first attempt to answer your own question
using spoilers will damage your mind.

NB: There are 34 other spoilers linked at:

<http://www.spod-central.org/~psmith/nh/>

And that's not all the spoilers for Nethack by any means.

No, you don't recall correctly. Blessed/uncursed/cursed status
has nothing to do with you willfully destroying your most
precious possessions. ;^D

Oh, yes, and not just items that could destroy the bag and
its contents.
