odd start to a game-no monsters?

I started a game as a male tourist, and there was a altar on the
first level, so I figred I'd wait around to sacrifice some corpses...
trouble is, I passed almost 5000 turns (eating all my food in the
process), and not a single monster ever showed...what's up with
that?
