The formula for prayer results uses your current luck number to seed
a random number and divides the result by 2. So consequative pairs
of luck have the same result chances: 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 and so on.
The key is knowing the exact list of results (nothing, golden glow,
light blue aura, intrinsic that ends up being protection after a bunch
of entries, blessed spellbook, crowning IIRC) and their exact order
and when crowning becomes possible. Once you know the luck
number that makes crowning possible you have your target luck
number. Count clovers to know your exact luck.
It's hard because you can leave the altar to fetch a monster, be gone
long enough for your prayer timeout to reach zero, and see an extra
clover. So not only do you need to know how to chose your target
luck you need to know how to *reduce* your luck deliberately.

I don't get why that particular combination, in agreed in general.
Once
you know create-monster spell or other source of vast numbers of
corpses any level with an altar becomes an AC decreasing machine
as easily as it becomes an artifact-vending machine. Interesting that
those two take completely different strategies. One limiting luck, one
ignoring luck and letting it peg at max.
