You went through the mines and you don't have over a dozen
daggers? Why did you decline to pick them all up? Daggers
are a tenth as common as rocks in the mines. Folks of
monsters line up to give you their daggers, and the experience
points that come from the process of graciously accepting
the daggers over the monsters' dead bodies.

Once you know how to do it, priests are a piece of
cake. Well, not literally - after you kill a cake
monster you eat its corpse but lawfulls don't do
that part with priests.

No, you have the order wrong on that sequence of
events. Do some prep, kill the priest, convert
the altar. Then re-earn your lost telpathy.

You can do that.

Killing a shrine priest is laborious but simple. Dig out
a wall. Get several hundred rocks and put them where the
wall used to be. Every arrow and dart from every trap
in the entire mines, too. Use #name to group them in
bunches of around 30 each so you can pick them up without
going past Burdened. Pick up your first bunch and
start throwing. Pick up the next bunch and continue
throwing. Keep throwing until the priest is dead. If
you prepared properly by hauling every rock from every
level of the mines, the priest will be dead long before
you run out of rocks. If you did not prepare properly,
the priest will be in perfect health the next round.
The priest will never move more than one square from the
altar and you will be two squares from the altar. The
diety will never zap more than one square from the altar
and you will be two squares from the altar.
After the priest is dead, your telepathy will be gone.
I don't know if it will hurt your luck. If you have
avoided killing peacefulls like a good lawfull, your
alignment will be much higher than you need before
starting. So it is time to convert the altar to the
greater glory of Tyr and get on with your business.
Telepathy is one of the gifts that can happen during
altar camping.
