Well, one doesn't have to. I've taken backups for years on
not-entirely-stable platforms - frex I used to keep savefiles on the CF
card on my Psion, which can't write with too-low batteries - and I've
never been the least bit tempted to use them for anything except machine
instability.
[Using "restore" on the Psion is a PITA because you have to slurp the
files off onto an NT machine.]
Of course the original situation is not a gray area at all.
