DC Stonesoup 0.5 -- Tiles too slow? Read this!

Hey!

If you've downloaded the Windows version of the latest release of
Dungeon Crawl Stonesoup and found Tiles to be painfully slow, I've got
some important information for you.

I've tweaked a number of routines regarding screen redraws, update
rate etc. For me on Linux things are noticeably faster now (though it
was never slow in the first place) but I don't have a Windows computer
to try the changes out myself. That means I need YOUR help to decide
whether further measures are necessary, and if so which ones seem
promising.

Please visit http://crawl.develz.org/trunk/ and download the Tiles
build of June 19, and try playing that one, then come back here and
report your results. Please try to be specific, i.e. "It's still too
slow!" (even if true) is much less useful than "Menus are faster now
but ..." Also, say, "pressing keys takes too long" could have several
reasons depending on which keys you mean (movement, item interaction,
entering text, opening menus, you name it).

If you're wondering what's in it for you, the answer is easy:
Hopefully a faster tiles version, and if everything goes well, an
official 0.5.1 that *really* fixes those issues. You might argue that
it's not your job to test the inofficial builds, and you sort of do
have a point there, but the sad fact is that none of our developers
has been able to reproduce the slowdown (by now tested on various
Windows systems) and while I have changed many things that _seem_ like
good candidates for making things faster, it's mostly all stabs in the
dark, and if we go by those alone when releasing the next version it
might still be unplayable for you.

Thanks for your cooperation,

wherever else Crawl players tend to gather. Thanks!
