YAVP DECj by the numbers

As usual, I skipped quite a bit. No Hells, Pandemonium, Abyss, Crypt or
Tomb. I would've done the Crypt but I didn't notice the entrance. Hell
was a temptation this time.

1018216 Oberon DECj-25 escaped with the Orb!

++Note the growing self-confidence. I actually give them names instead
of call signs now.

Dungeon Crawl version 4.0.0 beta 26 character file.

Vehumet is exalted by your worship.
There is a stone staircase leading upwards here.
Are you sure you want to leave the Dungeon?
You have escaped!

++I had little doubt I would after entering the midgame. The end of the
early game (centaurs) is a big hurdle for my DECjs. One other tight
spot was a Fire Giant that blasted me for at least 40 points somewhere
around D:25. Zot 5 required a bit of luck. Both antechambers had
teleport traps. I stood on the blade trap, yelled, firestormed, speared
and fled to rest a couple times. When I thought surely it was safe, I
blinked over the teleport trap. Killer Klown, a couple dragons, maybe
an abomination or two, and an electric golem were in there and feeling
just fine, thanks for asking. I did what I could, then fled into the
teleport trap and lived to tell the tale. Getting out with the Orb was
annoying in that the stairs I took in led me to untouched areas. Still,
nothing too bad.

++Giant bat, I pardon you. Feel free to use my stash. Now, I'm off to
set fire to things above ground.

Oberon the Annihilator (Deep Elf)
(Level 25 Conjurer)

Play time: 1 day, 09:48:33 Number of turns: 91346

++Yes, that's a long playtime. I leave Crawl open while I read websites
or compose these godawful posts. Doesn't seem like an excessive amount
of turns, considering that some call 6 digits normal. Crawl is a
long-ass game, though. I thought Civ was bad until I got into
roguelikes.

Experience : 25/1003179
Strength 6 Dexterity 14 Intelligence 34

++I know I've read that a low stat can mean instant death but it's only
happened to me once. Anyway, I did devote some gains to strength. A
poor item situation meant led to me using jewelry that lowered it more.
Plus I cured mutations at the very end, including two points of
strength. So I wasn't being all that risky, really.

Hit Points : 94/96 Magic Points : 47/48
AC : 21 Evasion : 17 Shield : 0
GP : 2477

You escaped.
You worship Vehumet.
Vehumet is exalted by your worship.
You are not hungry.

Inventory:
Hand weapons
u - a +0 knife (10 gold)
Armour
b - the +3 animal skin of Life (670 gold)
It insulates you from electricity.
It protects you from poison.
It makes you more stealthy.
It enhances your eyesight.

++I found this in the Snake Pit and wore it until Zot.

A - a +8 robe of the Archmagi (worn) (1343 gold)

++Snagged this off Boris, who I killed twice. No robes of resistance
found but after a while I got tired of checking every rag pulled off a
dead orc. If I hadn't got one from him I was going to buy a robe of the
Archmagi anyway. I'd never found one as a conjurer before and wanted to
check it out. It didn't seem overwhelming... Is it better than items of
wizardry? It seems unlikely that its pro makes up for its con. It was
good to have something to use those scrolls of enchant armour on. Oh,
and somebody tell me why I collect scrolls of enchant weapon?

B - a +2 cloak (worn) (135 gold)
C - a +2 pair of boots of running (worn) (245 gold)
D - the +2 pair of gloves of Yhyjipom Noxy (worn) (250 gold)
It affects your intelligence (+1).
E - a +2 orcish crested helmet of intelligence (worn) (225 gold)

++Pretty ho-hum other than the boots of running and the skin of Life.

Magical devices
w - a wand of hasting (14) (171 gold)
F - a wand of fire (15) (180 gold)
P - a wand of cold (14) (171 gold)

++Charged these up and then didn't use them.

Comestibles
g - 4 meat rations (160 gold)
x - a slice of pizza (18 gold)
Scrolls
f - a scroll of teleportation (30 gold)
h - a scroll of remove curse (30 gold)
n - a scroll of detect curse (20 gold)
M - a scroll of identify (20 gold)

++Should've brought more scrolls of teleportation. I used two on the
way out of Zot. My blinks must've burned up because I don't remember
using them.

Jewellery
d - the amulet of Xydif (around neck) (637 gold)
This amulet repels some of the attacks of creatures which have been
magically summoned.
It affects your evasion (+2).
It affects your strength (-3).
It insulates you from electricity.
It protects you from poison.
It protects you from magic.
It lets you levitate.
It lets you teleport.

++Not great, not terrible. I was hoping for something that would help
out on the fire/cold resistances front in Zot. I seemed to dodge
lightning pretty well, and in any event had Insulation. Warding isn't a
bad way to go, though, just in case those ancient Liches get busy. I
found it not long after the skin of Life and the most important
resistances were redundant at the time. The tax on strength didn't
help, either.

j - a ring of teleport control (right hand) (294 gold)
k - the ring of Deserixk P (392 gold)
This ring provides protection from cold.
It affects your evasion (-3).
It affects your strength (+3).
It protects you from poison.
It prevents most forms of teleportation.

++Now I feel dumb. I knew I had a teleport preventer, I just thought it
was in the Hive stash and was too lazy to go and get it. DERRRRRRR. Oh
well, it made Zot more interesting.

o - a cursed ring of teleportation (1 gold)

++Where did you come from?

G - an amulet of the gourmand (245 gold)
I - a ring of protection from cold (210 gold)
J - the ring of Rysityqy (392 gold)
This ring increases or decreases the dexterity of its wearer,
depending on
the degree to which it has been enchanted.
It affects your dexterity (-2).
It affects your AC (+3).
It affects your evasion (+5).
It affects your intelligence (+2).

++I was wearing this one in Zot. Again, not great but not bad.

R - an amulet of conservation (175 gold)

++Midgame mainstay, for lack of better.

V - a ring of protection from fire (left hand) (210 gold)
Potions
e - 4 potions of speed (100 gold)
q - 9 potions of cure mutation (1350 gold)
s - 17 potions of heal wounds (510 gold)
z - 3 potions of healing (60 gold)
L - a potion of porridge (10 gold)
Magical staves
a - a staff of conjuration (weapon) (250 gold)

++I'm beginning to think there's no point in identifying staves after I
get this one. It might possibly be worthwhile to carry a staff of
enchantment, but eh.

Orbs of Power
m - the Orb of Zot (250000 gold)
Miscellaneous
c - a silver rune of Zot (10000 gold)
i - a slimy rune of Zot (10000 gold)
l - a decaying rune of Zot (10000 gold)

++I wonder if shopkeepers on the surface buy any stock...

You have 9 experience left.

Skills:
+ Level 2 Fighting
- Level 2 Short Blades
- Level 1 Maces & Flails

++Had a hammer of protection in the early game.

- Level 1 Staves
+ Level 10 Dodging
- Level 6 Stealth
+ Level 23 Spellcasting
* Level 27 Conjurations
+ Level 9 Enchantments
+ Level 2 Translocations
- Level 2 Divinations
+ Level 16 Fire Magic
+ Level 14 Earth Magic
- Level 8 Invocations
- Level 6 Evocations

++Invocations was off almost as soon as it showed up. I use channel
energy quite a bit. I also made fairly heavy use of wands (I certainly
found enough of them) although Evocations was left on for a while.

You have 7 spell levels left.

++Elegance, shmelegance. I already have spells I don't use, why learn
more.

You know the following spells:

Your Spells Type Success
Level
a - Fire Storm Fire/Conjuration Perfect 9
b - Conjure Flame Fire/Conjuration Perfect 3
c - Lehudib's Crystal Spear Earth/Conjuration Perfect 8
d - Iskenderun's Mystic Blast Conjuration Perfect 4
e - Fireball Fire/Conjuration Perfect 6
f - Repel Missiles Air/Enchantment Perfect 2
g - Detect Creatures Divination Excellent 2
h - Selective Amnesia Enchantment Perfect 3
i - Ozocubu's Armour Ice/Enchantment Excellent 3
j - Blink Translocation Excellent 2
k - Bolt of Fire Fire/Conjuration Perfect 5
l - Detect Traps Divination Excellent 2
m - Magic Mapping Earth/Divination Excellent 4
n - Deflect Missiles Air/Enchantment Great 6
o - Insulation Air/Enchantment Excellent 4

++I made a lot more use of Bolt of Fire this game and found it to be a
good midrange spell between Mystic Blast and Crystal Spear. I learned
Remove Curse as my enchantment trainer, but I could've used Selective
Amnesia just as well... better, even, since it's lower level. I didn't
make a whole lot of use of Oz's Armour or Deflect/Repel Missiles, as
you could guess from the lack of Air and Ice skills. I did keep them on
in Zot and Vault 8, though. Detect Traps took forever to show up, well
after Zot traps did. I had been debating training the skill for a
while. When it did finally show up it pleased me greatly. WHOO HOO!!!
YES! YES! YES! Jeez, it's just a spell, Dave. It's not like it's
FiReSt0rM!!!11@ Which I had at Perfect, you'll notice.

Vanquished Creatures

++I'll try to go heavy on the snips. This part's like boring vacation
photos.

An orb of fire (Zot:5)

++Oh, yeah, he was in that antechamber too. I think it took three
spears to destroy it.

2 ancient liches (Zot:5)

++They didn't seem that much of a problem. Maybe because they were on
fire all the time. Mmm, fire.

Boris (twice) (Vault:6 D:26)

++Toldja I kilt him twicet.

3 Killer Klowns

++Why, some no-good varmint's been sellin' them Klown's fire retardant
suits!

Adolf (Blade)
Xtahua (Vault:7)
2 electric golems

++Peskier than I remembered.

Norris (Swamp:5)
2 golden dragons
++snip

2 titans

++One of these made for a large-ish speedbump in the mainline dungeon.
There was a vault... You've probably seen them, large, oval, with a
long, narrow, trapped entrance. The really crappy kind with no treasure
but plenty of monsters. I must've drawn them out because there was
monster after monster coming around. I'm getting low on MP and oh, look
a titan. I decided it was time to do the Snake Pit or Swamp or
something else.

18 acid blobs

++The Slime Pits isn't difficult for conjurers. Well, not especially.

Duane (Blade)

++Two uniques in Blades. Blades is easy, too, and decent experience.
It's costly in terms of food, because Mystic Blast is too weak, Bolt of
Fire is ineffective, and Crystal Spear can miss. Hmm, thought I was
going to try to keep this short.

++snip
Rupert (D:26)
Frances (Snake:5)
A skeletal dragon (Zot:5)

++Only one I saw.

A stone giant (shapeshifter) (Vault:2)
25 stone giants

++Saw a few too many of these. If not them, then their zombies or
skeletons were lurching out of my cereal bowl.

Agnes (Swamp:3)
Louise (Swamp:3)

++snip

The ghost of Dworkin the Transformer, a powerful SE Tm (Snake:2)

++Well, surprise surprise, a SETm ghost.

Maud (D:20)

++Dunno why I'm bothering to keep in the uniques, but stay the course,
I guess.

++snip

Norbert (Snake:3)
++snip
Erica (D:15)
Josephine (D:16)
++Snip

3 fire giant skeletons
A frost giant skeleton (D:26)
11 stone giant skeletons

++You see what I mean about breakfast.

An unseen horror (shapeshifter) (D:17)

++While unseen horrors can be a real problem, See Invisible came along
early enough this game. Actually, unseen horrors are a very good reason
for DECjs to not explore farther down the dungeon once you've found the
Lair, IMO. Sure, unseen horror attacks are often survivable, but
sometimes they'll get you in two attacks and I'm not always alert
enough for that sort of quick death.

Erolcha (D:9)
++snip

4 mimics
++They must've been mimicking something unremarkable, because I don't
remember them.
++snip

The ghost of Bleys the Transmogrifier, an experienced SE Tm (D:6)

++Hmm, another SETm ghost. What are the odds?
++snip

2 piles of gold coins
++Detect Creatures picks these things up.
++snip

Michael (D:15)
++snip

110 slime creatures
++snip

Donald (D:11)
++snip

A fire giant zombie (D:21)
2 frost giant zombies
An iron troll zombie (Vault:5)
2 stone giant zombies
++Perhaps I exagerated slightly. I was occasionally able to enjoy my
Wheatbix without interruption.
++snip

5 bumblebees (Vault:8)
++Vault guards! Dragons! Stone Giants! Uh... bumblebees!
++snip

Edmund (D:6)
Sigmund (D:4)
++Usually worth a comment, but snip.

Blork the orc (D:6)
++snip

205 killer bees
++snip

13 sheep
8 electrical eels
++The game could use some electric sheep. Snip.

Ijyb (D:4)
++Snip

496 fire vortices
++Almost 500. They aren't worth a lot of experience but it adds up.
Plus autotravel doesn't work if they're in sight. Snip.

190 orcs
++Snip.

3645 creatures vanquished.

And that's that.
