like tournaments, and uses things like nethack's Hearse, etc.
One type of tournament means you start a character, save the game,
and distribute the savefile. I don't want the tournament to exclude
people because they've got the linux build and the start was made
on a windows machine, etc. Likewise you shouldn't have a completely
different (or nonexistent) set of bones files available through
the Hearse just because you're on a different platform or version.
Never cared about bone files, but I have Angband save
files for turnaments on my AMIGA that most certainly
did not originate there, but on a different endian PC.
So that doesn't seem to be too much of a problem.
And all of that? That's why I should issue warnings, give the
player the option of converting or not, and generally take the
same view of a converted savefile as of an edited savefile or
a godmode savefile. Not eligible for high scores. Keep it
out of collections of "real" games. etc.
I joyfully update the game to the great newest version,
successfully load my great more-than-half-way-through
character ... and am not allowed into the high score
You are quite an evil man.
(Yes, I read that about the warnings. Half the people will
only see ,,can load older save files'' before upgrading.)
