Re: Linux - Bullet biting time

I still have soooo much to learn. :) Thanks, Jeff. I was just poking
around SDL's web site and there's some good information in the FAQ
section too. Now I have to figure out what this automake thing is. :)

This is my next try to find out that Linux is pleasurable and friendly. I have installed a new and shiny Kubuntu to port Xenocide to Linux by myself. Then problems started... Or maybe it's just a Linux reality that I'm not used to.
After a few years from the last try I see a fair progress. My sounds card is seen, video card doesn't have to use slow Vesa mode, even my network card works.
Instead of ugly text mode package installer there is an Adept, which looks very well. I have downloaded a lot of useful programming packages (make, gcc, g++, autoconf etc.). Next liked to have a handy "Total Commander" style file manager. Zonk! There is no such thing through Adept! Even the Midnight Commander doesn't exist as a package...
No problem, I have the KDE and the compiler so I will build one from the sources. Two hours of trying to build any of them.
../configure, "There is no header file blablabla", open webbrowser to find on some forums which package has it, download it. Repeat. Dependencies, dependencies, dependencies. Fine, I will use the Konqueror.
Then I wanted a nice IDE that I tried some time ago.
Package manager again doesn't know anything about them. No problem, I will build it from the sources.
(KDevelop || Code::Blocks) + ./configure = dependency hell again.
After next two hours of solving dependencies I gave up with the IDE.

This is Linux - let's play nerd console way ;) I have downloaded the FMOD and fortunately examples compile. The simplest one that uses default sound output doesn't work, but some others that allow to choose the output finally do. Something works! Full of positive energy I have downloaded the pdcurses library, which should be the next step of porting.
../configure and welcome to dependency hell again.

What a waste of time...

Thanks for the friendly "Kubuntu" distribution, even installing KDevelop under Cygwin I had fewer problems.

regards,
Jakub
