That's not mysterious, it means they can hear or sense him.
If you want them to move intelligently over short to medium distances,
you can use a pathfinding algorithm.
For long distance, I think what was proposed is really similar to a
variation on 'player scent trails' which has been discussed before.
IIRC someone produced quite an efficient algorithm for it.
