Sometimes I think axes, spears, halberds, and maces get a raw deal.
Sword:
-versatile, can be used for slashing, thrusting and parrying
-can be sheathed, carrying is safer
-balanced weight (makes easier to swing a heavier object)
Axe:
-can only swing, other attack types less useful
-can't be sheathed (at least not easily)
-not too balanced, most of the weight is on top of the object
