*Yet Another Overambitious Vapourware Idea*
Instead of being pure RPG-style (well sort of) game, more elements of strategy games could be incorporated. Here is how it goes:
Jimbo the Orc Beastfighter begins his life as a generic poor adventurer, he enters a town full of Humans who hate Orcs and will barely even talk to him. He goes into some cave, beats up badies, gains experience, earns some money looting and doing quests, etc. Once he's strong and rich enough, he goes and hires a couple of fellow orc mercenaries and leads his little band on the Human town in revenge. After some resistance from the pesky humans, Jimbo and his cronies succeed in exterminating the town population. They set up base in the town as news of their success spreads to other Orcs, and the like, who go to the town and join Jimbo. Jimbo invests some money and time training an army of Orcs, once the army is ready he can lead on the region capital city of the pesky humans. (These would probably be controlled by some AI but the player would be able to issue individual commands as well as yell out some team tactics). Once you've overthrown the capital, you win - who needs to go into that dirty mine to get some dusty old Amulet guarded by a Balrog anyway?
With another character, you could play for a Hobbit Archer. The Human town doesn't bother about you so much, so no real need to kill it. You could if you want to but Hobbits are generally harder to rally in an army against Humans who don't harm them (maybe just laugh at them). So instead you set up a farm, earn money from selling stuff, kill off raiders, hire peasants, earn more money, buy some artefacts, including some so-called Ring of Power, become super-powerful and invisible as you try to descend to the bottom of the dungeon to slay that Balrog and get that Amulet before the ring corrupts your soul or the Ring-Wraiths get you. (Say, make the Balrog dungeon too hard to try to accomplish without some sort of artefact).
Human Paladin - leads a crusade against the Orcs. Or goes rogue and leads a crusade against the Church.
Etc.
So what I'm talking about here is an open-ended game where you basically need to achieve some sort of glory, doesn't matter what kind. Some types of characters could find some certain goals easier to accomplish, but nothing restricting them from attempting.
The strategy aspect, that I mentioned in the opening paragraph are the things of commanding an army, controlling the farm business, etc.
