I'd find this laughable, if it weren't grossly offensive, off-topic, and

And me. :P

Suffice it to say, you're wrong wrong wrong.

He sure is.

I did a little googling and it looks like neo posts via google groups, no
matter what name he posts as.

Unfortunately, yes. I still haven't found a better provider.

Did you know that those idiots have added a captcha to the post form,
but forgot to disable their stupid spam-prevention "post limits" when
they did, despite having just rendered them completely obsolete and
despite the ludicrously high rate of false positives they generated,
hitting just about anyone that was participating very much in any high-
traffic groups? :P

Morons.

Now I have to answer a captcha (which malfunctions fairly often,
either failing to display at all or incorrectly claiming I did it
wrong when I didn't) for every post but I don't get the benefit I
should of not having to switch logins periodically to get around their
older, brain-dead attempt at spam reduction? I'd tolerate the buggy
captcha that sometimes mistakes me for a bot if they'd have gotten rid
of their older, much buggier and more problematic spam blocking
strategy; the captcha is probably fairly effective at preventing spam
and its false positives are very easily worked around, while the 14-
posts-a-day limit per account is both nearly worthless at spam
prevention and highly inconvenient to legitimate users.

Harriet happens to use a particularly ancient version of the operating
system from 1992

Naturally, since updating it would be a colossal pain (and, I'll bet,
expensive).

This is remarkable. That's 16 years old. We're talking Windows 3.0
here. It's no wonder it has problems. Nobody, but nobody, is using
Windows 3.0 anymore; there's a handful of copies of Windows 3.1 still
in use, to support legacy apps, but nobody uses 3.0 because it could
easily be upgraded to 3.1. Most Windows users use XP/2K/2K3 now, with
some adoption of icky Vista and some use of Win9x/NT, and all of these
have had service packs and security updates.

RISC OS users, meanwhile, seem to be stuck using whatever ancient
version came with their computer, modulo a likely difficult and
expensive upgrade process.

The shifting fortunes of MacOS and Linux are subject to somewhat
mysterious vagaries at times, but there can be little doubt why RISC
OS failed to take off in any serious way, can there?

Certainly. I have been discussing operating systems calmly, and I shall
continue to be calm. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about you,
Valis, or [implied insult deleted]

None of the nasty things that you have said or implied about me are at
all true.

I have been, and I am, quite calm actually, and I will remain so in
all likelihood. But I will step in now and again to remind people that
none of the nasty things being said about me are true, until people
stop saying such things.

though based on what I've seen, if everyone ignores the latter he'll
ignore you back, or make the odd harmless on-topic post.

This much is true.

He seems to respond nastily to personal attacks and criticisms

If you call writing "none of the nasty things that you have said or
implied about me are at all true" responding "nastily". :P

[implied insult deleted]

Do not misquote me again. Your post contained supposed "quoted
material" that did not occur in the post that you followed up to nor
summarize material that did. That is incorrect. Stop being dishonest.

None of the nasty things that you have said or implied about me are at
all true.

the bewildering menagerie of addresses -- is that really necessary
because of some wackiness with Google Groups?

Yes; see above.

Remind me never to use it for anything but searching the archives.

Lucky you. Some of us don't have that luxury, having no viable
alternative for usenet access. :P
