PROOF OF THE (GEORGE SMITH == NEO) CONJECTURE:[snip nonsense]
I'd find this laughable, if it weren't grossly offensive, off-topic, and directed partially at me. Suffice it to say, you're wrong wrong wrong. I did a little googling and it looks like neo posts via google groups, no matter what name he posts as. I did a search for "none of the nasty things" as he's repeated that exact phrase several times, and turned up hundreds of posts in various groups by a good half a dozen email addresses, all of them gmail addresses, and all of the posts were posted through google and were similar in style and content.
Check my posts out and you'll find that they don't come from google groups.
Now on to the actually semi-on-topic part of this post:
Oh, and in case anyone's wondering: RISC OS is stored on ROM
Good GRIEF. Even waiting to have a CD shipped (or having to burn one) to update and patch the OS would be bad enough. Now either you have to ship them your computer for them to patch it, or you need to know how to solder?
I'm guessing the vast majority of users never upgrade their system with so much as a single patch, and as a result the vast majority are vulnerable to long-since-documented exploits.
No networking-capable system should be that difficult to patch. There's a reason why putting the OS in ROM went out of fashion right around the time modems and BBSs became popular.
The 'zero page' mentioned (and ignored) in an earlier post is the
contents at address zero in RAM, which is volatile and therefore cured
of any 'scribbling' on a machine reset. Zero page is an illegal address
under RISC OS 4 and later (itself more than eight years old now
Given the awkwardness in patching, let alone actually upgrading, the existence and age of a less-vulnerable version isn't going to matter very much.
Harriet happens to use a particularly ancient version of the operating
system from 1992
Naturally, since updating it would be a colossal pain (and, I'll bet, expensive).
Now can we please all calm down, put those toys away, and let's have no
more of this silliness.
Certainly. I have been discussing operating systems calmly, and I shall continue to be calm. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about you, Valis, or (especially) Neo/nebulous...though based on what I've seen, if everyone ignores the latter he'll ignore you back, or make the odd harmless on-topic post. He seems to respond nastily to personal attacks and criticisms directed at him, but except for those posts he seems to be harmless (aside from the bewildering menagerie of addresses -- is that really necessary because of some wackiness with Google Groups? Remind me never to use it for anything but searching the archives.)
