b) The Long Bow 'Trolsunnejzun' (x3) (+19,+19)
Is that Esperanto again?
Nope. A true random artifact...
Shuffle, used a bit. It never seemed to do anything useful though, not
like Wands of Wonder which have a good chance of getting a really
out-of-level attack.
Shuffle mostly does random teleports and summonings, as per the theme of Trump. Works on a 1d120+(plev/5 for Rogues & High Magi). (so those two get to avoid the worst of the bad summons :)
Teleport - well this one's the big benefit of Trump magic, isn't it :-)
Used a lot.
Dimension Door, used a bit but I was never quite sure how far was a safe
range. And I think Teleport was cheaper anyway, I usually didn't run
away until I was seriously low on mana.
10 grids in any direction.
Minor Trump - is this the one that summons an animal?
Nope. It summons a random creature from any dungeon level less than the player's level. If you're level 10, for example, it can grab any creature from any depth up to 450'. A level 50 caster will never get a creature whose native depth is greater than 2450' - but could just as easily get a kobold as they could a drolem.
Nexus Bolt, one I might have used more if I hadn't had Chaos magic to do
damage with. But it was pretty expensive and not that good.
It's the same damage as Fire Bolt, as I recall, with a significantly higher chance of beaming. It's mainly meant for High-Magi who might take Trump as their school - they tend to have a tough time with magical combat relying solely on Mind Blast and the minor summonings they can do until they get Death Dealing (dispel living for plev*5 damage) in [Five Aces]... They also have more mana than anyone else, so the cost isn't too much of a problem, though still a bit steep and they'd have trouble with groups.
Magic Missile, I used this a lot obviously.
Trap/Door Destruction, hardly used. I wanted the XP from disarming and
I was good at it.
There isn't much XP from disarming anymore - I *think* it's half what it used to be (1-5?), except for Rogues.
Mana Burst, used all the time as an early area effect spell. Also
useful when cast repeatedly against uniques.
Yeah. I made that way too powerful, I think. I should've upped the cost a bit, at the very least, or reduced the cost but put the damage down to Stinking Cloud levels. It has a down side, of course - there's a 5% chance it'll do actual Mana damage (instead of Magic Missile damage) for 50 + (plev*1.5) instead of the normal 25 + (plev*1.5). The extra damage is nice, of course, but perhaps not at the cost of losing all non-artifacts it happens to hit. :)
Fire Bolt, not used so much as a lot of things seemed to resist fire and
it seemed quite expensive for the amount of damage it did when I first
got it.
9+((plev-5)/3))d8 is better than what it used to do in ZAngband for the same price. :) (that would be 12d8 at plev 14, for example) 'Course, that's a bit puny compared to some of the later ones...
Polymorph Other, used a couple of times. But most of the really nasty
monsters I had trouble with were quest monsters where it was no use.
Also, I wanted to kill things and get experience for them, not turn them
into Icky things and Salamanders. (Of course it might have made things
worse, but it never did when I tried.)
Sadly, the ability for polymorph to make things worse was excised from Angband many years ago - no more YASDs from people using a wand of wonder (since polymorph'd be a bit deep) from their first trip to 50' to try and kill a battle-scarred veteran and having it turn into a D. :)
Sonic Boom - I don't remember using this much compared to Mana Burst.
I think it centered around the player and didn't seem to do that much
damage.
Does only 65+plev damage - but it's sound damage in a 2+(plev/10) [2-7) grid radius ball. The stunning odds for monsters getting hit by sound probably need to be boosted a bit, though.
b) The Broad Sword 'Chainsword' (11d5) (-27,+7) (+2)
So, you needed a lot of 'to-hit' boosts before this became an option.
Yes. Probably wouldn't have been an option anyway, I was hoping to be
able to sell it.
The aggravation on it's a bitch. The 5400gp or so it'd cost to enchant it to 0 would be more than made up by how much you'd sell it for - collecting that many enchant weapon to-hit scrolls, though, especially if you need 'em for weapons you're actually using...
