IOW, the left bar has all the constant info, and the bottom
bar has all the temporary info. I hope this solves the problem you
note.

As I count it, there are 3 free lines on a standard-sized terminal down
the side after counting the monster health bar; OTOH, there is an entire
row of text along the bottom, such that you can fit:

Hungry Graze Confused Afraid Poisoned ProtEvil Berserk SInvis RAcid

but on the side, you could only get

Cur AC 22
HP 491/ 491
SP 80/ 80

[**********]

Graze
Confused
Afraid

I get the impression I'm not interpreting you correctly, though, so please
feel free to tell me as much. I get that you'd rather have the info on
the sidebar, but I think that's a really inefficient use of the space
available at the bottom.

Well, the first thing to say is 'colour me stupid'. Of course, what I had
done was look at my screen, see loads of blank space down the left and think
that's the place to do it. I forgot about the overwhelming neceessity for
compatibility and the 80x25 screen. Your comments make sense now!

I still think it's not an efficient way (for the player) of displaying info,
however. On another post you mentioned that you don't see HP/SP as
temporary info, but to my mind they are - they are in pretty constant flux,
and it's critical to be able to see what they are, so they should be with
the blind/confused/poisoned flags, whereas stats and character info are
relatively stable and not so critical. How about moving the race, class and
level name to the bottom, giving you six free lines. Moving Level, NXt and
AU as well would give you 9. I can't really see a way to move stats as they
wouldn't be displayable in a friendly way along a row.
