:-/ Can you point to a picture or two so I can understand what you
mean? Or, failing that, post some test code so I can look at what it
does? Or, failing both, explain in more detail?

More concisely:
The XOpen curses specification has no analog to CSS z-index. It's an extension
to render two layers of characters.

Of course, there's nothing preventing a true GUI from doing this....
