Windows font misery

I like to play *bands from my USB keyfob/pendrive - no worries about
transferring savefiles etc. (means less temptation to scum as well).
I also have a few variants installed on my laptop for the, er, slack
periods (you know, train journeys and so on). Handy when the USB slots
are full, or if the keyfob is playing up.
Yesterday I got frustrated with the pisspoor seek times of my newest
USB drive, so I took it out and fired up O on the laptop. All the
windows stayed black, until I changed the fonts. It was apparently
still looking for the fonts on the key fob, even though they are
available on the local installation. It seems to be unable to 'forget'
where it last found the fonts, and find a new set. This holds true
even for the same version of the same variant (O 1.1.0 in my case).
Does anyone know how to overcome this without rebooting? Presumably
there is a way to unregister or unload fonts so that a local
installation will find its own local fonts when it starts up.
Grateful for any tips,
CC
