That solves the waiting around. The rest of it is about personal
preference for flavour. Personally I'm of the "ID once" school - I like
the fact that you don't know anything at the start, that you have to
find out what each potion/scroll does etc. Once you've ID'd a potion,
you recognise it in future.

What about the random power/sustain on items that have them?

Should knowing a shield of rFire allow you to partially know that a
shield of resistance provides rFire? You would know then it is
resistance or elvenkind or artifact immediately.

You are assuming that we don't change the current range of ego-items.

No, I was asking a very specific question!

There no reason why it couldn't be a random ego shield with rfire, one
other low resist and one high resist (in the same way that NPP weapons
can randomly have a couple of slays and a *slay*).

So the random power/sustain on items is just another thing that you
won't recognise if you haven't seen it before, but will if you have. Or
you can *ID* an item to get all the info (and greatly reduce your need

Heretic! There should not be any *ID*.

for ID in the future!).

The next question is, assuming you accept this, if you have learned
rFire on a shield, should that allow you to recognize rFire on a
sword and vice versa? I've been toying with the model that you have
to learn each attribute separately for each slot.

In the past, I removed identify entirely from [S]. I mailed the
changes to Leon, and he later told me he incorporated half of them.
More recently I took identify out of NPP. I still haven't decided
exactly how things should work. Perhaps one mistake is to try to keep
things as close to V as possible, hoping that eventually the changes
will migrate there in the far future. For example, I kept the idea of
pseudo, and changed the identify spell/scroll to immediately grant
strong pseudo.

Either you can figure out what it is straight away (as
soon as you see it, or wear it), or you can't - until your skill at
identifying stuff increases.

I don't believe in a "skill at identifying stuff". You should learn
by using, or not at all.

That's certainly true for plusses, ESP, FF, regen etc. It's a bit

Why would you know ESP immediately if there are no monsters on the
screen? Why would you know FF before you stepped into a pit? These
seem like things you could learn. OTOH, I just checked, and I put ESP
into my list of obvious3flags because it didn't seem worth the effort
to code it properly. :)

different for resists and slays. These should really be instantly known
as soon as you are hit by that element or hit that kind of monster. But
that gets complicated ...

Actually, that was pretty easy to do.
