Some may say the RNG is out to get me.
Somehow I managed to get to 1200' on my first excursion to the dungeon,
managing to find and bring back an unidentified ROS +16, which I then
identified rather than selling to the store un-id'd. Don't ask me this is
very non-me behaviour ;).
I had found very early in the peace a defender which is how I managed to get
to 1200' on my first dive.
Anyways I am now wandering around at a depth I have no experience with. Base
speed is around +16 or a bit less (loot, but my base equipment + bolts is a
bit heavy). Questions:
1. I don't have RPoison. How bad are Greater Basalisks? (yeah I looked at
the spoilers on ook but there's no mention of how much damage they can do)
Go to 2000'-2150' and scrounge for a ring of RPoison, as a swap with
RoDamage. (And in the long run, find a very good Ring of Dexterity for
a swap. You need more blows ASAP!)
Greater basilisks (and AMHD) can kill you with a single breath. They
do 666 (700) poison damage and 333 Dark/Nexus damage. Drolems are
even worse. (Ethereal Dragons & Shadow Drakes are also very scary.
And Dreads are going to be a pain until you get more blows.)
2. Ditto, Kavlax? You are probably tough enough to take on Kavlax, hasted. He has some
extremely dangerous breaths at +10 speed, but not at +26 speed. I
don't like to mess with him without RConf and either RDark+RLight or
RBlind and a way to do a lot of damage quickly. Still, you can
probably kill him with that bow, and certainly if you are cheesy and
use a "Hockey Stick" corridor.
None of these monsters are likely to kill you so long as you get the
first move. But to do so, you need to detect them before they attack.
CARRY A STAFF OF DETECT EVIL! (And perhaps Magic Mapping and certainly
Detect Objects too.)
You are too deep to rely on just being the toughest guy in the
neighborhood anymore. Drolems can still get you, but all the others
are evil. And drolems are pretty rare. (Also: use large screen.
_Detect Evil isn't quite common enough for ordinary size screen.)
3. Am I better off with a defender to get a bit of stealth, or with one of
the Gondolins?
Gondolin. Or Westernesse, if it gives you 3 blows. With maybe +4
stealth from other places, you can worry about stealth. (Osondir+Gloves
of Free Action would be a reasonable option.)
b) a Heavy Crossbow of Extra Might (x4) (+7,+17) (+1) {sang 1700 E Might +1}
It increases your shooting power by 1.
Trying to use this as much as possible. but I am running out of ammo due to
not scumming anywhere.
Is this all-but Artifact-level bow in V? or would extra shots be better?
Shots is probably better, depending on the damage bonus, and Haradrim
is certainly better, but that's a very fine bow.
I have been trying to detect as much of the dungeon as I can but I have
still been fighting way too many T's. the o's are no problem I eat them for
breakfast :)
Try carrying a maximal detection kit. It's a totally different, and
more fun, game.
* Detect Evil
* Magic Mapping (if available. Door/stairs will do if not.)
* Detect Objects
* Detect traps, full illumination. (You already have these.)
(Of course, full Detection & ESP+RPois is better, but until then, go
with the best available.)
Dump: note I'm in the middle of the dungeon just near a zoo. Wondering
weather to fight the Greater Basalisks or run away (or are these a monster I
should just run away from anyway?)
Run away. Zoos are ALWAYS a waste of time. (They just destroy
equipment, they are dangerous, and they don't get you any loot.)
