The precompiled Windows version has issues as well, at least under XP.
And in a weird way...

If you have just a *.gz file, it won't load. You get a "savefile
from the future" error message, and it then aborts over a broken
savefile.

Strangely, if you have both an uncompressed copy and a compressed
copy of the same file name, it will successfully load the compressed
copy. The uncompressed copy doesn't even have to be the same save
as the compressed one.
