Drop great or they have large drops for their level, yet are still easy
to kill. (Bullroarer drops 2d2 objects; Scatha etc drop 7d2. Sometimes
you can't kill them, but it's worth planning for these uniques in
particular, and carrying specific gear with them in mind.)

A level 25 gnome mage has basic to-hit skill of 12 + 20 + 1.5 * 25 =
69. This is the same as a level 1 Half-Orc Ranger.
Add 3*(9+7+10) for bonus from bow, arrows, and !Hero, subtract an
average of 5 for distance. Final thb is 142.
Against AC 80 (Mim) you have a (142 - 80*3/4)/142 = 57% chance of
getting a hit.
Default bow with enchanted ammo has nominal damage of 3*(9+7+2.5) = 55.
This is discounted to 32 if you account for misses. (Without !Hero it
drops to 25. With full buffing (Hero+Bless+Berserk) it goes up to 40.)
In comparison, a Ranger with the same equipment can pretty much count
on a 80% chance of hitting Mim, whether he uses !Hero or not. This
corresponds to 44 damage per shot.

The damage is the average damage. For an actual hit, you still get 55
or whatever.
For +Might bow, the bonuses are usually larger than +9, and the
multiplier is 4, not 3. With a bow like that, you may not need to
carry rods. (Do the calculations to decide. Note that Scatha has AC
130, so he's much harder to hit than Mim. When you get to Morgoth,
only Holy Might ammo and a great (Haradrim) bow can compete with Mana
Storm. Slay Evil ammo is not worth hoarding for a mage.)
